Job Position Description
Computer Service Engineer
Portland, Oregon
Overview of Position
The employee in this position will be responsible for working on client computers as
assigned by the client. It is this employee's responsibility to work in a professional
manner and insure that the client is satisfied with the results or the progress towards a
desired result. The key to this position is communication with the client. This employee
will perform diagnostics, repair and follow up with each client.
Desired Communication Skills
- This employee will be a self-motivated individual that is able to convey technical
concepts in layman terms to a client
- He/she is well versed in many different software programs, or is able to quickly pick up
on programs based on their use of a Windows interface
- He/she works in a manner that is a logical progression of steps toward a desired result
and provides for alternate solutions as needed
- The Engineer is able to resolve client disputes, and knows when to get help on a client
dispute
- The Engineer suggests alternatives to a client's current computing environment as needed
- The Engineer works with other CCSI staff to help clients develop long term and short
term computing strategies
- The Engineer always keeps the clients interests at heart. He/she places himself/herself
in the client shoes to insure that what the Engineer is doing is in the client's best
interest
- The Engineer understands the boundaries between client relationship and knows how to
maintain a good client relationship without becoming too friendly with the client
- The engineer knows when to push back and understands that clients may ask him/her to
perform tasks that are not in their best interest
- The engineer communicates with the client when they will be late for an appointment, and
follows up with the client after each call
- The engineer understands the value of a donut
Desired Technical Skills
- Has an understanding of how to install Windows 95, 98, NT
- The Engineer knows the importance of a good backup
- The Engineer understands viruses and how to prevent them from occurring and spreading
- Has an understanding of troubleshooting tools such as Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Single
Step, Command prompt, Basic DOS command for xcopy, copy, del, deltree
- Understands how to install peripherals such as Modems, Network Interface Cards, Video
Cards, Scanners
- Understands how IRQs function, the purpose of I/O addressing and other basic computer
concepts and how to troubleshoot conflicts in ISA, EISA, PCI and other popular computer
architectures
- The Engineer has obtained or is working towards his/her Certification in Microsoft
Products and other leading technologies
